Greenspace For Communities Initiative

Greenspace is any vegetated land, water or geological feature within and around built areas. The Greenspace for Communities Initiative improves the extent and quality of greenspace management in and around Scotland's settlements. The initiative builds on the experience of earlier projects focused on the countryside around towns and cities. The key aims are to create greener settlements, enhance biodiversity, make settlements attractive and distinctive and to encourage better use of greenspace to contribute towards more sustainable settlements.

The Inititative was set up in 2002 with two independent, non-profit trusts, Greenspace Scotland and the Glasgow & Clyde Valley Greenspace Trust, with the aims of -

  • developing Profile
  • winning Resources
  • supporting Local GfC Partnerships
  • promoting Good Practice
  • monitoring

SNH is leading the Initiative in partnership with local councils, the voluntary sector, community and business interests. Partnerships are being developed to improve the co-ordination of greenspace work with health, social justice, planning and economic development agendas, as well as environmental objectives. Building the capacity of urban communities to become actively engaged in the on-going management of greenspaces in their own areas is a key theme of the Initiative.

In the Glasgow and Clyde valley area, SNH is now working with local authorities, the Forestry Commission and other partners to develop a new Green Network Partnership which will succeed the Glasgow and Clyde Valley Greenspace Trust.
