Flowering Plants and Ferns
Flowering plants and ferns (vascular plants) range from small floating water plants to tall trees. There are about 1,600 species growing wild in Scotland. In addition to 'native' species, which successfully re-colonised after the retreat of the last Pleistocene ice sheet, considerable numbers of species have been reintroduced, accidentally and deliberately.
The total number of species in the British flora is relatively small by world standards, as expected from biogeography and the need for re-colonisation since the last glaciation. Nevertheless, the Scottish flora is sufficiently rich to contain many rare and beautiful plants.
