Mammals
There are 62 species of mammal living wild in and around Scotland. Of these, 48 breed on land and a further 13 are found in coastal waters, of which 9 have been seen with young.
Species abundance is greatly varied, ranging from millions of some insectivores and rodents to only a few hundreds of other mammals such as reindeer. The habitats occupied are on land, above and below ground, in the air and in the sea.
The mammals can be broadly categorised in the following groups -
- insectivores (hedgehogs, moles, shrews);bats;
- lagomorphs (rabbits, hares);
- rodents (squirrels, voles, mice, rats);
- carnivores (fox, pine marten, wildcat, otter);
- ungulates (deer, goats, sheep);
- marsupials (red-necked wallaby); and
- cetaceans (whales, porpoises, dolphins).
