Advising Others

Freshwater Fish

The Scottish Executive and SNH are co-authors of a recent review entitled 'Protecting and Promoting Scotland's Freshwater Fish & Fisheries'.  This review was launched for consultation on 25 April by the Fisheries Minister, John Home Robertson, at the AGM of the Association of Salmon Fishery Boards.   A copy of the review, and the Minister's consultation letter is  available on the Scottish Executive's website.  John Markland, SNH's Chairman, also spoke at the launch event. The document reviews:

  • the conservation of freshwater fish and their habitats,
  • the associated fisheries, including relevant legislation,
  • possibilities for increasing fishing opportunities, and
  • fishery management structures, and the roles of the bodies involved (including SNH)
Opportunities for improvement or change are highlighted, and the Minister seeks views on these in his consultation letter.   The Scottish Executive and SNH are looking for constructive suggestions indicating the best way forward, and SNH expects to meet a number of the key players, such as the Association of Salmon Fishery Boards and the 'Angling for Change' group, during the consultation period, which ends on 4 August.

The SNH response to the document can be found here.
