Formal Education

Scottish Natural Heritage has a special role in encouraging education for and about the natural heritage in Scotland. By supporting environmental education both in formal education (schools and colleges) and in recreational settings (sites, visitor centres and museums), we can encourage people of all ages to appreciate and care for our natural heritage.

Peoples’ decisions at work can influence the quality of the natural heritage. Their environmental understanding and skills may be enhanced at college or university, during work-based training or through continuing professional development. As part of an on-going programme, we provide advice and support to the further and higher education sector on the development of vocational courses; we have also developed practical guidance for use in the workplace which covers a broad range of countryside management techniques.

For SNH, formal education refers to the education delivered through government provision. It encompasses compulsory education from 5 to 16, as well as additional experiences provided in pre-school nurseries and post 16 curricula.

Our aim is to encourage young people to make choices that will benefit the natural heritage, and ultimately to take action for the natural heritage.

Our team of education professionals work with other agencies and organisations to provide training, resources and advice to enable the effective delivery of education about the environment.
