SNH recognises the importance of maintaining and enhancing biodiversity through the work of planning authorities. This can take place through the adoption of policies in the development plan which promote and protect species and habitats identified as priorities in the LBAP, and also via development control via individual opportunities to protect and enhance species and habitats through planning applications. Planners can seek assistance on these elements through their local authority LBAP officers, and other in-house ecological experts.
